A History of Chocolate

The Coco plant is a plant indigenous to South America, but when the Spanish conquistadors brought the plant to Europe, it quickly set out to conquer the world of sweets.

The Aztecs, the first ever peoples to eat chocolate, did not have chocolate as we know it. They had a bitter drink made from the beans, much like unsweetened hot chocolate would taste like, and they used the beans as a kind of currency. Most Aztecs had almost an addiction to this drink which they thought would bring them closer to the gods.

When the Aztec drink was introduced to the Spanish court it was far to bitter so it was sweetened with sugar. The Spanish maneged to keep their drink a secret for nearly 100 years, but it finally reached Italy in 1606. From Italy, the drink spread throughout Europe, gaining popularity very quickly.

in 1657 a french man opened a shop in London selling the first solid chocolate. From there the solid chocolate industry exploded, and companies like Hershey, Cadbury, Ghirardelli and many more were formed. I formed this blog is to tell you which one of those companies is the best.
